Receiving grace is not a matter of good works or of being justified by one’s words. Once again we recall that Jesus did not come to seek the righteous but sinners.

When the president of a modern state exercises his right of reprieve, this means that a person has been found guilty and condemned but after the pronouncement of condemnation there is a declaration of pardon. Grace is not exercised upon someone who is not previously condemned.

Jacques Ellul

Law is a handmaid of grace, a sheepdog that drives us back into the fold of grace when we stray out into the wilderness of works.

Jerry Bridges

Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Hebrews 4:16
