Advent in Thailand

December 8, 2009 — Leave a comment

Last Sunday, I worshipped at The Seven Fountains, a Jesuit retreat center in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Following Thai custom, everyone took off their shoes before entering the church and stored them on low wooden shelves.

I loved the cross hanging over the altar–a wonderful picture of victory over death.

Afterwards, I didn’t have a chance to walk the prayer labyrinth. But I enjoyed wandering through the very peaceful grounds.

Later that afternoon, I read over the center’s newsletter which mentioned an online contemplative prayer site, Sacred Space, http://sacredspace.ie/ run by Irish Jesuits. I followed the day’s prayer–a brief but restorative time that felt like a spiritual spa.
